Rock Table 01 of the Rock Series is imagined within a contemporary art gallery to host as guests enter the space. With a light beverage and savoury treat sitting beside an adornment of burnt candles that compliment the gallery’s form of a deconsecrated church [of San Carlo]. Rock Table 01 serves as a gathering point of refreshment and reflective conversation.
When Is A Table Also A Table: Rock Series, is an explorative design project delving into the relationship between table designs and community. The curated rock collection is positioned as tables to accommodate any function that the viewer wishes. To host, nourish and act as a catalyst for community connection and intimacy, When Is A Table Also A Table focuses on the form of the undressed table as much as the one that’s adorned. The Rock Series follows an intrinsic interest in found objects to hosting and dining through the innate human experience of gathering and collecting. Curating scenarios with rocks and other found objects such as shells, sticks, sea glass or small manufactured accessories generate a meditative yet engaging moment of play that utilises imagination. This act mimics the play that we would partake in as children with ‘make-believe’ at its core. The mundaneness of a rock with a visually simple form produces a whimsy vehicle for play as the object isn’t what it is but what you want it to be.
Placed into an array of imagined narratives, the positions of these tables visualise the living quality of the designs and how their role can nurture community in different environments.
